Ideas Sharpen Ideas

Very few artists have ever thrived in solitude, and there is nothing more stimulating than the conflict of minds with similar interests. When we have a strong sense of calling to our ministry, all too often we can fall into a self-imposed isolation of “think like me” that, for a time, will drive an ministry’s focus. But without outside stimulation, that process can become stale and, as a result, the ministry’s focus can become blurred. I was in a Bible study some years ago where the leader would end the formal study with a discussion time, and he would start that by saying, “OK, that is what God said, now let’s get into an argument!” For several weeks I was really put off by that, until I noticed that the ‘arguments’ in the discussion were always checked by sound doctrine - facts not just opinions - and he had a remarkable way of keeping us all on topic, yet encouraging a great diversity of conflicting ideas. Too Big To Fail

Too big to fail-That well-worn assertion begs several questions: Are they truly failing and by what standards? If so, why are they failing? Is taxpayer funding the only way that organization(s) can be salvaged? You recall what happened to Pan American World Airways, Woolworths, or the Titanic-the world moved on after they failed. Some time ago, I had the privilege to serve on the board of directors in the beginning years of a national radio teaching ministry. Serving on that board with me were several highly respected businessmen, including the wise and inspiring Fred Smith, Sr. In our first board gathering, Fred was asked to lead us in prayer. It was a prayer that I will never forget – both for its simplicity, and for its profound implications. His prayer was only three short thoughts: “Dear Father, we are in earnest in this endeavor.
