Missed Opportunity or the Real Challenge?

As we move through these slower days of summer, we know the responsibilities pressing on us. Yet it seems that the ability to move things along or to just simply “get stuff done” is just beyond our grasp. Thinking about this reminded me of watching my Granddad on his farm at the breakfast table as he would quietly “mix a portion” of butter and sorghum, waiting for Grandma’s biscuits to come out of the oven. “But Granddad, the biscuits aren’t here yet!” I would cry. But sure enough, there was something amazing about the combination of those fresh, hot biscuits and the “portion” when it all came together. Thinking about my Granddad’s forethought in preparing for a simple culinary treat, while things were quiet at the table (and I was just watching), reminded me of something Dr. Charles Stanley said: “Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and a downward spiral begins.” What are the opportunities that you are missing—maybe it’s the donors you could be building relationships with, or the knowledge y ...

“Well, it’s summer—nothing gets done now.”

“SUMMER SLUMP” also known as “The Doldrums,” “The Sargasso Sea,” or “The Horse Latitudes” (more about this one in a bit). It has arrived! We all have so much to do now, yet it seems that we only think: · “School is out.” · “Let’s go to the beach.” · “Disney admission prices skyrocketed.” · “I feel so peaceful in the mountains.” At this point, it appears that everybody throws all of their energy into their desired vacations and summer activities BUT the important tasks get a half-hearted side glance. If you think like me, you’re already feeling a bit guilty about what needs to get done (but you know it won’t), and what everyone really wants to be doing in these summer months. As I think about the slow days that are ahead, the words of a Pink Floyd song come to mind: Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way BUT, I am also ...
